A home for a month

We left Oaxaca on Tuesday evening, embarking on a 12 hour overnight bus ride to San Cristobal de las Casas. We arrived in San Cris at 8am feeling very crusty and gross, and treated ourselves to a really nice coffee. We have finally found a town in Mexico that has cafés that could rival those of Melbourne, much to our delight. Due to us getting sloppier and sloppier with our planning, and becoming like true backpackers, we had no hostel booked and walked the streets of San Cris trying to find a vacancy somewhere cheap. In our aimless wanderings we chanced upon a language school, and before we knew it we were booked in for classes for a month. After another few hours of walking we eventually found a furnished room to rent for the month, and it is here that we will be stationed for the next 28 days!

San Cristobal de las Casas is a stunning down, and we fell in love with the place immediately. Many native Indians roam the streets trying to sell their beautiful scarves and handicrafts, but they are not as pushy as in other cities we have been in. We love the colonial buildings and cobbled streets, and the way the town is nestled in a valley with huge mountains all around. The days are really warm and sunny, but as soon as they sun goes down it gets really cold and we have to pile on jumpers and jackets.

We love the house that we are living in. It is a huge house perched on the rise of a hill overlooking the town. We are renting just one room in the house, and we have a shared living and kitchen area with other guests. Because we are staying for a month it is very nice on our budget!

We have been attending our spanish classes two days already, and although it is challenging, we are really enjoying it. We both have private lessons, four hours a day from Monday to Friday. Since it is Saturday today we are hoping to visit a nearby Indian villages in the hills above the town this afternoon.

We are really enjoying life here, and are looking forward to checking out some local bars where apparently they all play reggae. Apart from the dramatic experience of an ATM swallowing my credit card in Oaxaca, our little dog Lily being sick back home, and the ongoing saga of tying up loose ends with Telstra back home, life is pretty cruisy and fun.
