Troncones

Troncones... I am not too sure what to tell you about Troncones, because it is a very well kept secret. After Puerto Vallarta, Nyall and I were both very determined to find a much quieter town. After some googling, and with the help of our trusty lonely planet guide, we found Troncones. Most websites we looked at said it was a sleepy little town, perfect for surfers, but not so good for swimmers. We read that rocks littered the beaches, the sand was coarse, there were strong currents, and an abundance of sharks and crocodiles. This may not sound appealing, but our main priority was to find a place where there weren't too many people.

We arrived in Troncones last Tuesday, with a bit of sadness at leaving another place we were now familiar with, and also with the excitement of finding something new. The websites were right: this is a sleepy little town. There is one paved road, many stray dogs, beach bungalows, friendly locals, and cheap restaurants (if you'd even call them that, more like local's front yards). Of course there is also a few pricier restaurants lining the beach, but nothing like what we had experienced in Puerto Vallarta.

Our accommodation here is gorgeous. Our current home consists of a cabaña with private bathroom, a shared kitchen, and a beautiful terrace overlooking the beach. The water is dramatically blue and clear, and we couldn't help ourselves going for a dip as soon as possible. We were surprised with how gentle the waves were, and thought it was the most perfect swimming beach we have found. The sand is soft, there are minimal amounts of rocks on the beach, the crocodiles are confined to the lagoons behind the town, and a shark hasn't been spotted in quite some time. We were pleasantly suprised to find that all negative reports of this town are inaccurate, and it even made us wonder whether they had been concocted to keep Troncones hidden from the multitude of tourists that visit other beach areas of Mexico.

Our days here are relaxing and quiet. We have been doing lots of reading, swimming, exploring of nearby bays, and kicking back in hammocks. We even got to see some turtles being released into the ocean. Over the next few days we want to do some bike riding, hire a kayak, and climb a mountain. Apart from some sunburn and mozzie bites, we have found our most favorite place in Mexico yet.

Sounds idyllic. Glad you managed to escape from the "tourist barrage". Enjoy this place while you are there. Looking forward to reading more about your travels.
