After a few days in Montezuma, we took a crazy bus ride (crazy because the bus driver sold more tickets than he had seats, and people - including us - were left to stand in the aisles hours on end) to San José, and then on to Heredia. Heredia is a university city, only a few kilometres from San José. We chilled out in there for a few days because it was a bit less chaotic than the capital, and we had to do some essential shopping to make us feel a little less "feral-ish". We took our clothes to a laundry, which made us feel very special and clean (so, so much better than doing them in the communal bathroom showers!).
From Heredia we traveled across Costa Rica to the Caribbean Coast, or more precisely, the Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary. At the sanctuary they care for sick or injured sloths, and we had the opportunity to stay the night, go on a tour, and meet some orphaned sloths. We really enjoyed the experience of staying at the sanctuary, chatting with the volunteers, and learning more about this strange but intriguing animal. I won't bother talking more about the, the photos are more exciting!!
On a bizarre finale to Costa Rica, and a strange tumble of events that even we are a little confused to work out how it all fell into place, we ended up on a freebie tour of the Tortuguero Canal with lots of free food and drinks. The company that provided it all were trying to sell us some holiday package, but we were happy to settle on the free stuff :) A fun last night in Costa Rica, and it was made all the better because we were joined by two other Australianos, and some strong Ozzie pride was felt. Particularly evident when John Williamson and Cold Chisel were broken into chorus.
We loved Costa Rica, we couldn't get over how green and lush the country is. Sadly we had to pass through Costa Rica rather quickly, and we ended up only being there about a week.
