Marlei decided to splurge a bit and buy me a birthday gift for next year, so she gave me a new GPS for next year! I wanted one built for hand-held off-road use, and the Garmin Oregon 300 matched all my needs. While it does road navigation and directions, it's geared toward trekking, so has lots of features relating to track recording and waypoint marking.
It arrived via courier this morning, so I got a bit of a chance to play around with it today. One really neat thing is that it acts as a mass storage device when connected to computers, so all you need to do is plug it in and an extra drive appears with all the routes and waypoints in the standard gpx format. This makes it simple to use with Linux and a program like Viking. It also means I won't have any problem connecting it to PCs at internet kiosks next year and uploading map data as we go. Here's a sample route I made of a trip to KFC tonight:

Besides the help it should be in finding our way around next year, it'll be fun to play around with maps of where we've been, and all the elevation data and everything. I want to try geotagging our photos too, so we can see where they've all been photographed. Lots of sweet gadget fun for me!
Where we've been and where we'll go...

Oh wow. I wished so bad that I had one of those when I was overseas.
I guess I see who Elliot was Geocaching (hunting for treasure) with... Nice one!
Shell's 6110 has a GPS - but every time we've taken it hiking - the detail has been so poor that it hasn't been worth taking it out.
I'm not sure I'd call what we did 'geocaching'! More like random searching through a forest with flashlights at night :P I think we need to try again in the daytime and do it properly. We did find a really cool waterfall, though.
so Nyall, I see you decided to open your birthday present before I got home from holidays! Glad you like it!! See you in a few days.
